Understanding Substance Use as a Coping Mechanism: Embracing Intentionality

By: Abby (Abigail) Burd, MSW, LCSW, LCS26867

Coping mechanisms are the strategies and behaviors we use to manage stress, navigate challenges, or cope with difficult emotions. These can range from healthy habits to less optimal choices. Sometimes we reach for alcohol or drugs as coping mechanisms.

It’s important to recognize that these coping strategies emerge from a genuine need for relief, comfort, or escape. MiraCosta College mental health counselors emphasize understanding and acceptance without judgment. This helps us approach discussions around substance use with compassion and empathy.

The Role of Coping Mechanisms

Many of us turn to substances not out of recklessness, but as a way to manage stress, pain, or overwhelming emotions. This coping mechanism is rooted in a basic human desire for relief and well-being. Acknowledging this can shift the conversation from stigma and shame to understanding and support.

What might it be like to say, “thank you” to the substance for serving you up until now?

Intentionality in Substance Use

While recognizing the role of substances as coping tools, there is a powerful opportunity in embracing intentional use. Intentional substance use involves mindfulness and self-awareness. It’s about recognizing when and why we turn to substances, and finding healthier ways to address those underlying needs.

The Pitfalls of Unconscious Use

Unintentional or habitual substance use can sometimes lead to unintended consequences. By fostering awareness and intentionality, we empower ourselves to make choices that align with our values, our well-being and long-term goals. This isn’t about judgment or imposition—it’s about creating a space where you feel empowered to make informed decisions about your health and happiness.

Empowerment Through Choice

We believe empowerment comes from affirming your autonomy and inherent worth. Similarly, when we approach substance use with a focus on intentional choice, we reinforce the idea that you have the capacity to make decisions that are right for you. This shifts the narrative from one of control (or powerlessness) to one of empowerment and self-determination.

The Power of a Pause

The next time you find yourself reaching for a drink or your vape, etc, try to just pause for half a second. That’s it! Half a second. Creating that tiny bubble of time can open a world of options. Once you’ve paused, you can redirect to impulse for the behavior to a question:

What am I needing in this moment?

Maybe what you need is comfort. What else could give you comfort? Maybe you are bored. What else could entertain you? Lonely? Who could you call or text? (Do you see how this could work?)

Moving Forward with Compassion

As we navigate the complexities of substance use and coping mechanisms, let’s remember that everyone’s journey is unique. Consider letting us help create a safe space for exploration and growth. We can foster an environment of understanding and compassion. Together, we can embrace intentionality in substance use, supporting you in making choices that enhance your well-being and overall quality of life.
