Is your relationship a healthy one?

"No one will ever love you like I do."

"I will hurt myself if you leave me!"

Domestic Violence/Intimate Partner Violence encompasses more than physical violence, and presents as a progression of negative behaviors, such as not respecting boundaries.

Above are examples of Emotional Abuse, and reasons one may find it difficult to walk away from a relationship. Also, if one is unaware of the signs of an unhealthy relationship, it is easy to equate the abuse to passion or love.

Physical violence is estimated to occur in 4 to 6 million intimate relationships each year (Rodriguez, Bauer, McLoughlin, & Grumbach, 1999). In movies, we typically see a woman as the victim. It is important to note that anyone can experience Domestic Violence. Domestic Violence in any capacity can leave one feeling shame, guilt, fear, sadness, anxiety, and hopelessness to name a few.

Here are a few examples of an unhealthy relationship:

  • jealousy
  • isolation from friends/family
  • blame
  • lack of trust
  • lack of respect
  • manipulation
  • possessiveness
  • belittling

Here are a few examples of a healthy relationship:

  • mutual respect
  • trust
  • effective communication
  • supportive
  • kindness
  • commitment
  • honesty
  • brings out the best in you
